ABC Circle Films

1st Logo
(1971-1975)
ABC Circle Films/Productions - CLG Wiki

Nicknames: "Cheesy Word Circle", "Mismatched Circle"

Logo: We see the words "An ABC Circle Film" in a thin Peignot font (similar to the one used on Viacom's first production logo around this time) over a black background. Then, the words become shaped in a curve style, and begin to rotate in a circular motion, as though they are about to circle around the screen's middle. However, the exact same phrase in the exact same font, outlined, is seen going across the screen in an outward curve, as if it was the other half of the circle. Meanwhile, the phrase is seen going back to its original position, and when the logo stops it is exactly in the same position that it was when the logo started.

FX: The words "circling". All Scanimate effects.

Cheesy Factor: Ugly logo. Also not a very smartly-created one.

Music/Sounds: A Christmas-like orchestration, complete with bells.

Availability: Extremely Rare/Extinct.

Scare Factor: Low to medium, due to the in-your-face animation of the words circilng.

2nd Logo
(1975-1979)
ABC - CLG Wiki

Nicknames: "Constellation", "ABC in the Space"

Logo: On a space background, we see two neon-outlined ABC logos (probably one red and one white, but hard to tell because the light effects are so cheap)
aligned like a Venn Diagram, and as they fly up to the screen the two logos merge into one with a neon-purple outline. Below, the neon-red text "circle films" pans from the right.

FX: The ABC logos flying and merging, the "circle films" panning.

Cheesy Factor: The space background and panning effects reek of the primitive "scanimation" techniques typical of computerized logos of the time. Also, those ABC logos are so badly colored the merging effects are barely visible!

Music/Sounds: A dramatic synth tune.

Availability: Extinct.

Scare Factor: Medium, due to the overly cheesy FX and dramatic music.

3rd Logo
(1979-1984)

ABC - CLG Wiki

Nickname: "Multicolored Circles"

Logo: Against a black background, six multicolored circles scroll into the near-top of the screen while five multicolored circles scroll into the screen below them. Once the two are aligned in the middle, they become the orange letters "CIRCLE FILMS," in a font reminiscent of the Terminator film title. A white circle then drops from the top of the screen and lands on the "I" in "CIRCLE." In it are the black "abc" letters.

FX: The circles moving, forming of the letters.

Cheesy Factor: A primitive logo that looks (and sounds) as though it was made in the 1960s instead of the early 1980s.

Music/Sounds: A dramatic fanfare, with an ending similar to Paramount Television's 1969 "Closet Killer" music.

Availability: Extinct.

Scare Factor: Low to medium; the dramatic music, usually after a dramatic theme may unnerve some people.

4th Logo
(1984-1988)
ABC - CLG WikiABC - CLG Wiki

Nicknames: "The Shining", "ABC Shining"

Logo: On a light blue background, we see the stacked words...

ABC
CIRCLE
FILMS

[In same crystal lettering as used in "ABC Motion Pictures" logo]

zoom from the bottom of the screen. The logo "shines".

Variant: There is another variant of this logo with the red background.

FX: The words zooming, the logo "shining".

Cheesy Factor: Simple animation.

Music/Sounds: The closing theme of the show.

Availability
: Still preserved on Moonlighting, followed by the Buena Vista Distribution logo.

Scare Factor
: Low.

ABC Productions

(1988-1998)

ABC - CLG Wiki

Nicknames: "ABC Sunburst", "ABC Sunrise"

Logo: On a very dark brown background, we see a bright light with the word "productions" in the ABC "tube" font zooming out. The ABC logo, cut in half, rises from the light and shines brighter, zooming out with "productions". The ABC copyright information "(C)
American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. All Rights Reserved" fades in below. Sometimes the logo is bylineless.

FX: The "ABC productions" zooming.

Music/Sounds: A harp fanfare with a choir. Alternately, a cheerful synth tune is used.

Availability: Can be found on DVD sets of My So-Called Life and The Commish, as well as the final season of Moonlighting. It can also be seen (albeit silent) on WGN's reruns of America's Funniest Home Videos (only on the Fugelsang/Fuentes episodes, though). The second music variation is long gone and appeared on the Bob Saget version of AFHV.

Scare Factor: None to low; the regular music can give you the chills (especially on My So-Called Life, where this is preceded by the creepy Bedford Falls logo), and low for the other music; it is jarring if you don't expect it.

The ABC Productions logo seen at the end of The Commish (the fourth one) used the show's ending theme instead of its own music.
